Ascent to the crater of the Villarrica volcano, by MAWIDA ADVENTURE
Definitely, going up to the crater of the Villarrica volcano is one of the most important tourist attractions in the region. Its powerful volcanic activity for thousands of years, consolidates it as one of the most active volcanoes in South America.
It has an altitude of 2,847 meters above sea level and a glacier nestled on top. This volcano is one of the most visited every year. Our agency, Mawida Adventures , proposes it as a unique mountain experience.
The ascent begins very early in the morning, meeting at our office in the center of Pucón. There, our guides deliver the necessary orientations for the day of ascent.
Here the adventure begins: going in a private transport to the base of the Villarrica volcano, located approximately 30 minutes away and at an altitude of 1500 meters, depending on the season. In winter, the start is generally at 1,250 meters above sea level.
From there, depending on the season, an exhilarating walk begins, which lasts approximately 5 to 6 hours.
It is also possible to take a cable car in the first part, depending on the availability of the ski center, and it is highly recommended to save energy in that section. Attention! The cable car is always subject to weather conditions and operation of the same ski center.
Subsequently, the ascent continues until reaching the Chapel and then through several zig-zags we reach the El Filo sector. This place is important as it marks the middle of the ascent. Once in that place, it remains to cross the glacier that in summer generally meets volcanic slag. From there you can get closer to the final stretch of the volcano until you reach the summit.
In the last stretch, you reach the «False Summit». This sector is very important, as it is considered a security zone. In addition, it is the place where the guides recommend hanging the gas mask around the neck. This is a preventive measure, in case there were gases coming from the lava at the top. We leave our backpacks in this area and finally, we ascend to the crater.
The views from the top are indescribable, lakes, more volcanoes , the imposing Trancura valley… and clearly, the lava (on many occasions) make this summit something considered once in a lifetime.
The descent is done in two ways and is quite extravagant: sliding on the snow is mixed with a protector and plastic and walking for short stretches. This is in order to find the descent lines, which are being opened by the mountain guides. This is the most entertaining part of the descent and the least tiring. As long as there is snow, we just slide down, looking at the great Lake Villarrica.
Upon arrival at our agency, there is always an appetizer to celebrate the experience. The ascent to the crater of the Villarrica Volcano, one of the most active in the world, is a must for everyone who visits the area.
